Dear Friends of the REST program,
What will replace REST?
The ten-year temporary shelters under the auspices of REST came to an end on the last day of April. The 30-something entities including St. Vincent’s, Homeward Bound, Ritter Center, New Beginnings, and the churches and synagogues as well as county, city, police, fire, hospitals, mental health and substance abuse treatment centers along with the Marin Housing Authority are now meeting regularly to target the most needy and vulnerable of the homeless in Marin by name and need, assessing and counseling in a coordinated effort to solve individual housing needs with support.
The housing shelters run by Homeward Bound, New Beginnings, and others are all working on the same model of finding and supporting individuals in housing, rather than just shelters. Some of the shelters will be open during the days to facilitate the counseling and support that so many guests need.
The model is called Housing First. In the last 6 months, “forever housing” has been found for 50 of these individuals. We need so many more.
We look forward to exploring any new possibilities for service among our homeless neighbors.
Some possible volunteer opportunities that will replace our REST service include:
Cooking, teaching cooking or other living skills, visits in homes, eating with people, trips to the library, hospital visits, memorial services.
I know that many of us at CPC will miss our Monday nights with the REST friends and neighbors. I will be exploring, over the summer, what kind of program may need and accept our help and volunteer hours. If any other CPC members have ideas or suggestions, please let me know. – Marghie Goff
